Former UFC Heavyweight Champion to referee WWE’s Fight Pit match at Extreme Rules 2022

WWE announced Saturday Night that former UFC Heavyweight Champion and professional wrestling fan Daniel Cormier will be on pay-per-view next Saturday in Philadelphia. The show will see the main roster debut for a Fight Pit match, in which Cormier will serve as a referee as Matt Riddle and Seth Rollins. The match can only be one by knockout or surrender, which puts extra emphasis on the referee’s decision when the brutal match finally comes to an end.

Cormier has had talks with WWE in the past, mostly in connection with some commentary work (a role he has since moved into in the UFC since his retirement from MMA). He also confirmed back in July that the two sides discussed his work with The Creed Brothers at NXT.

“I actually talked to them a lot,” Cormier said at a live event on Twitter Spaces last July. “I am friends with a lot of people who are at this company. I talk to Triple H, and I have some friends now who are competing [in WWE]. So my brother, not my actual brother, one of my friends, Jacob Casper, is now Creed’s brother in WWE. The Creed Brothers are the NXT champions, the younger league champions, and so I’ve been asked several times to do things with them in order to get promoted, but I haven’t been able to make it work. It’s something I really want to do.”

On top of the official reveal of the mysterious “White Rabbit,” WWE’s pay-per-view system is filled with intense matches. You can see the full card (so far) below:

  • Matt Riddle vs Seth Rollins (pit fight match)
  • SmackDown Women’s Championship: Liv Morgan vs Ronda Rousey (Strict Rules Match)
  • Raw Ladies Championship: Bianca Belair vs Bailly (ladder match)
  • Drew McIntyre vs. Carrion Cross (Belt Match)
  • Edge vs. Finn Balor (I left the match)
  • The Brawling Brutes (Sheamus, Ridge Holland and Butch) vs. Imperium (Good Old Fashion Donnybrook Match)
